Diabetes Research

I have not been delivering very many workshops lately because I have been involved in a very interesting project. I have a contract to help with a Diabetes Research Project in a First Nation community.
Diabetes is a very serious health concern for aboriginal people and it can grow to epidemic proportions. This project is looking at ways that help to reduce the incidents of Diabetes.
I like that this project is taking a very proactive approach and I believe it has to be done on a long term basis in order for it to be effective for the next generation.
This project has some wonderful people that I am working with. They are dedicated and very talented. I have the latest newsletter and our facebook page that demonstrates some of this great work!

Devastation

5/16/2011

Yesterday and today has been a roller coaster of emotions......and it continues. Our northern area of Alberta has been devastated by the impact of wildfires. The Town of Slave Lake has been evacuated, many homes and businesses have been lost to the wildfires....the losses are enormous and there will be many years of recovery.
There is also something to rejoice in this terrible tragedy, no lives have been lost. People have all survived even with all of these deadly wildfires from yesterday and I am so happy about that.
There are two pictures below that I took at my acreage. This shows the amount of smoke that was near my place yesterday afternoon. The wind shifted and moved the wildfire in another direction and our community was safe...for now.
The last picture was taken by NASA Satellite and shows the Slave Lake wildfire as well as other wildfires in the north. Many small communities have been evacuated to the Towns of High Prairie and Peace River, some people have continued on to the Cities of Grande Prairie and Edmonton. My thoughts and prayers are with all the areas that may be impacted. I will continue to pray....I hope you do too!

Slave Lake Fire and Many Others in Alberta, Canada:

There are a number of large fires occurring throughout much of central and northern Alberta, Canada today and NASA's Aqua satellite captured this image of them. The town of Slave Lake has already suffered major losses. The Slave Lake fire can be seen in the middle of this satellite image from NASA's Aqua satellite. The two red areas just south of the lake are the locations of the fires and the smoke appears to be blowing in a northwesterly direction.

Happy Spring!

Well, it's been a long time with Winter but I think Spring is finally here. I hope everyone is doing well and feeling happy. I am so happy to be able to walk around my yard and amongst the trees. I can hear the birds and the squirrels. For the last few days I hear the geese returning.
I have been reading this book called "Roast Moose and Rosaries" written about Mary and Fred Courtorielle. Mary attended a Residential School and Fred was raised in the bush. Their experiences speak to the losses in the aboriginal families but some of it also speaks to some wonderful traditional activities that welcomed events.
Fred talked about a Spring and a Fall feast. In the Spring they would thank God for what they have. It's a wonderful traditional to have gratitude and thankfulness every day but to also welcome people to a feast that incorporates gratitude! Hiy Hiy

I have been hearing and seeing geese head toward the lake all week. It is a wonderful reminder that Spring has arrived!
