Hello there all my blog readers. I can't believe it's been about four months since I've posted something on my blog. I sincerely apologize to all my readers. I have been so busy with work ( I will tell you all about it  in different entries) and home life. My interests are expanding and I've been having some fun with my family and friends.
I have been posting stuff on my facebook page. For those of you who want to "like" my page, I would appreciate it. My goal is to get 100 likes and I will give out a prize to a lucky person! Hopefully that will be soon. Spread the word if you get a chance! Here's a link to the page: Aspenroad Resources.
Here's some pictures which show what I have been doing these past months...

Summer Fun

For the past four years or so, I have taken my grandson on a summer adventure. Sometimes his mom and sister join us but for the past two years we have gone by ourselves. For me, this is a precious time where I get to enjoy his company and witness him seeing things for the first time. It brings joy to my heart.
We went on our summer adventure last week. We decided to go to Jasper, Alberta again. We went last year and we had so much fun travelling on the gondola, climbing a mountain, soaking in  the hot springs and walking around the Town of Jasper!
Our plan this year was to travel to the Columbia Ice fields and walk on a glacier!

Picture
This year, one of the first things that happened was getting lost! We drove past Jasper and ended up on the road to BC. So we were in British Columbia for about 10 minutes. We stopped to acknowledge it, because Kaiden said it was the first time he has been out of Alberta. A special moment for him.
Picture
I love the mountains so much. I go to the mountains to pray and express my gratitude for the life I have. I am so blessed. Yes, there are always issues that have to be dealt with, but that's life. I would prefer to deal with my life in a positive way. There is so much joy to be a part of.
Picture
Here's our first view of the mountains with the glaciers on them. They are called the Columbia Icefields. There are five glaciers situated in the same area. They have been there for thousands of years. They are melting every year, the only accessible one for tourists is the Athabasca Glacier.
Picture
Visitors can park near the Glacier and walk up but we decided to take the tour. Once we have purchased our tickets, we wait in line for a bit,  take an 8 minute tour bus ride close to the glacier. We then move to one of these vehicles. They cost about a million dollars each and are the Ice Explorers.
Picture
Once we get to the glacier, we head out to explore! Kaiden makes snow balls and throws them into the water. He sure enjoyed himself.
Picture
This is the melted glacier water coming down from the mountains. It is blue because of the minerals in it. The minerals are actually black and you can see them along the sides of the glacier. The water is drinkable. It is cold and tastes so good.
Picture
Here's the view looking down the glacier. The area is so beautiful.
Picture
Here's my grandson standing next to the Ice Explorer just before we were heading back down the glacier.
Picture
Here's where you go to purchase tickets and start the journey up the glacier and back down. There are some nice pictures there. Our summer adventure was so much fun. I hope you get an opportunity to see new things especially through the eyes of a child or grandchild. Hiy Hiy.

Fall 2012

It's was my birthday yesterday! Each year is a blessing and a time for reflection. I love this time of year that I was born. The fall brings beautiful colours, earthy smells and Indian Summer. We have our first turkey, of the fall, on Thanksgiving and my favourite holiday is Halloween. I love to see the excitement on the children's faces. The costumes are so cute. The anticipation of all hallows eve is fun to talk to my grandson about. I can't wait for my grand daughter to begin to understand it too.
As I am always taking pictures, here's some of my favourites for this particular fall. Please enjoy them but remember they are copyrighted. Thanks...Hiy Hiy.

Collectables

Here's an example of the objects my 8 year old grandson, Kaiden, has been collecting in our travels together. When he finds something he likes, he puts in in my beach bag. I find them when I clean out the bag some days later!
We have been discussing what we should do with said collectables and came up with a few ideas. The first one is that he wants a dreamcatcher made from the feathers. When he comes to visit in August, we will go into the bush and get some willow. Of course, we will make a traditional offering of tobacco, as we will with the feathers we will use.
Then I will teach him how to make one, with prayers for protection from his Kokum.
The rocks will be put into his "nifty" jar that we made from an old pepper container. This will help him to keep his things in one area. We may end up doing some drawings on the stones to put on his window sills.
As for the bull rush, I'm not sure yet but an idea will present itself. There is nothing better for a child then to use their imagination and create something given to us by Mother Earth and our relations. I am so blessed to have an opportunity to teach my grandson. Hiy Hiy

Loving Summer

July is here and so far it's been great. I finished my workshops for the summer during the first week of July.
After that it was time to be Kokum and enjoy the grandchildren. It's been the most fun. The days with my grandson were spent at the beaches around the Lesser Slave Lake. We live in the most beautiful area and I made sure we saw as much of it as we could. It was nice that the weather co-operated and we had hot, hot July days. We both were a bit sun burnt but we laughed so much. I'm looking forward to spending more days with him in August.
Then my grandson went to his dad's and I spent time with my granddaughter. She's only two years old and so we spent our days outside. She enjoyed her little pool and her little house. She loves to laugh and have fun!
Here are some pics of our days together.

My grandson, Kaiden, is eight years old today. I am one proud Kokum when I think about him. He's my travel buddy, when he has time off school we plan an outing together. Sometimes it's a day trip, other time we head out on a summer adventure. When we are together we laugh a lot and enjoy each other's company.
I am so grateful that he is here on this earth, more so I think because when he was two he had a liver transplant. The fear of losing him has caused me to express gratitude whenever I think of him. He is truly a blessing to my family. Hiy Hiy, thank you!

Grand-Daughter

On March 30 it will be my grand-daughter's second birthday! My "baby girl" is so special to me. I haven't had much opportunity to see her these past few months but she is always on my mind. I am so excited that I will have her visit for Easter Week.

Butterfly Laughter by Katherine Mansfield

Grandmothers Are Mothers Who Are Grand
Grandmothers are mothers who are grand,
Restoring the sense that our most precious things
Are those that do not change much over time.
No love of childhood is more sublime,
Demanding little, giving on demand,
More inclined than most to grant the wings
On which we fly off to enchanted lands.
Though grandmothers must serve as second mothers,
Helping out with young and restless hearts,
Each has all the patience wisdom brings,
Remembering our passions more than others,
Soothing us with old and well-honed arts.

Happy Birthday Kiona Sage Priscilla.....Kokum loves you!

Today my Granddaughter is born

I have not been working much for the month of March because I wanted to be able to be available and drive to the hospital when my daughter had her baby. Her due date was March 20 and the baby was overdue. It was a long wait and every day began with an anticipation of my grand child's birth.
I wanted to introduce you to my beautiful granddaughter. She was born on March 30 , 2010 at 9:49 a.m. Her name is Kiona Sage Priscilla.
Needless to say I am so honoured that my daughter and her husband decided to add my name to their daughter. I am touched and almost cry whenever I think about the passing on of my name.

Picture
This picture was taken shortly after Kiona was born. I was waiting outside the labour room and I could hear her cry. She sounded like a little lamb, so quiet and so startled to be in this bright world. They put her under a heat lamp and began to clean her up.
If you notice, the umbilical cord is still quite long. I was talking to her and the nurse asked if I wanted to cut the umbilial cord to make it shorter. I said yes, and that was amazing to be able to do that. Quite an experience. They assured me she could not feel anything.

Picture
This picture shows Kiona on the weigh scale. She weighed 9 pounds 5 ounces. That is very big and she is very healthy looking. She is 20 inches in length, so a very good sized baby. Marisa took very good care of her while she was pregnant.
Picture
This picture shows Kiona with a soother. When Marisa tried to feed her, she would not latch on so we had to help her learn to prepare herself for her food. She learned quickly and it wasn't too long afterwards that she started to eat.
Picture
Here is Kiona all dressed up and nice and warm. She did so well with adjusting to the world. She has a strong cry and makes herself known when she is not happy. That is a good thing,
Picture
Here's Kaiden with his new born sister. He was so excited about her birth and calls her "my baby". He is proud to be a big brother. I will spend time helping him to understand his responsibilities as a brother. He will do an excellent job!
Picture
This last picture is of my baby girl Marisa and her family. She is such a good mother and partner to her man. I see her strength and I am so proud of her. I can't wait to see how they develop over the years. Such a joyful day to witness life. I am thankful to the Creator and all my relations.

My Mother

11/30/-0001

The source of my strength is my mother. All my life I have known her to be strong, in personality and in her physical being. She took care of twelve of her children, three of her grandchildren and her great grandchild. My mother once said to me "I don't know what I would do without children around me".

When I was growing up in Faust, my Dad would work all the time, usually away from home. My mom would take care of the household and she usually worked at some other job. In Faust I remember that she gutted fish at the local fish plant and cleaned the rooms at the Lakeside Hotel. We used to have turns going with her and helping her clean. My job was to make sure the faucets in the tub and sink were shiny clean.

In order to maintain control of all of us and everything else she had to do, my mother would yell and hit us when she felt we were doing something we shouldn't have. When she was older she said that if she had known any different than yelling and hitting she would have tried something else.

My mother's childhood was hard work and being yelled and hit by her mother. She went to residential school, which was a time of hard work and abuse as well. I didn't learn about any of this until I was an adult. The first time I found out how my Kokumee would hit her children was at her funeral. My Aunties were telling stories about being hit and not taken care of in a good way. My mother wanted them to stop remembering those times.

I also remember my mother telling me that as a child she used to take care of her younger brothers and sister. Her sister Elizabeth used to think that my mother was her mother. Mom said Elizabeth cried lots when my mom left home to live with my dad.

Well, here it is, I love my mother. Even when I was growing up, I knew she loved me, she did so many wonderful everyday things to keep us clothed and fed. She used to either make or adjust clothes for us. I remember this beautiful dress she made me for my sister's graduation. She made it exactly the way I wanted it. She never used a pattern, she measured cloth against us or just "looked" at us and sewed something.

When I was an adult, with my own family, she told me she was proud of me, and she told me she loved me.

I want to thank my mother for her strength, without it, I wouldn't be the person I am today. I am grateful for the lessons of my life and most grateful for her.

Thank you Creator!
