The next day, along with two of my colleagues, we presented a short one hour session on the River of Life: Aboriginal Youth Suicide Prevention On-line Course. The workshop took in the development of the one day workshop and then how it grew into a partnership with the Millbrook First Nation in their technology agency. My section was to talk about the "teaching Circle" and how it outlines the on-line course through the eight modules.
The other days I managed to take in three presentations. One was from Heather Fisk who talked about "Raising Hope in Canadian Communities". Such an excellent speaker.
The second was a group presentation from the Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) about their programs in First Nations Northern Ontario. I posted a picture below of these three awesome ladies, Corinne Fox, Jacki Alto and Shirley Salt. Great strength and commitment they have.
The last session I managed to hear was from Dr. Brenda Restoule, she spoke of her First Nation community and the effect suicide has on it but also the success a First Nations community can have in using the traditions and culture to heal. It was a wonderful presentation.
I did manage to do a bit of walking around the general area and I have posted some of those pictures as well.
Enjoy each day, they are gifts!
